What Vetica measures — and what it does not tell you

Vetica asks two focused biological questions from a saliva sample and helps you decide what deserves a closer look. It is not a broad ingredient panel, and it does not give you a long list of foods to avoid.

You do not have to change everything at once. Start with a clue, make one focused change, and see what happens.

Intended use

A focused first step, used alongside your veterinarian

Vetica is intended for dog parents who are trying to make sense of recurring digestive, skin or ear symptoms and decide what to do next. The test provides a biological measurement. Your dog's symptoms and food history provide the context. The Vetica app brings those pieces together into a short, dated report you can share.

Vetica is not a diagnosis and not a substitute for veterinary care. It is not intended for emergencies, and it does not replace formal elimination-and-challenge testing carried out with a veterinarian.

The two markers

Inflammation Check

What it measures
Calprotectin (S100A8/A9) in saliva

What it does not tell you
It does not tell you the cause of the signal, where in the body it comes from, or how strongly a dog is affected.

Gluten Response

A gliadin/gluten-related marker in saliva

A gluten-related signal was found, or no gluten-related signal was found in that sample today.
What it does not tell you
It does not diagnose gluten allergy or intolerance, identify a specific food, or prove that gluten caused the symptoms.

Both tests use lateral-flow immunoassay technology, a rapid-testing platform used for decades in human health and adapted here for dogs. The Vetica app's camera reader helps interpret the strip consistently. Validation of marker interpretation, confounders and repeat-test timing is ongoing, which is why Vetica reports focused signals rather than diagnoses.

Limitations

What a Vetica result cannot do

  • Each result is a point-in-time reading from one saliva sample. It describes what the test could see in that sample, on that day.
  • Line darkness does not indicate severity, concentration, or how strongly a dog is affected.
  • A signal found is a clue to investigate, not a cause. A signal not found does not rule out a food-related or other problem.
  • A 21-Day Food Check is a practical diet-response checkpoint for clinically stable dogs. It is not the same as a formal veterinarian-guided elimination-and-challenge food trial, and it cannot rule food allergy in or out.
  • Where itching, skin or ear problems are the main concern, your veterinarian may recommend a longer food trial than 21 days.
  • Vetica is not for emergencies. Warning signs such as blood, repeated vomiting, collapse or a painful belly need veterinary attention regardless of any test result.
  • Published salivary calprotectin work established that the marker can be measured reliably and rises in inflammatory and immune conditions; it did not establish that the signal is specific to the gut. Vetica therefore says "inflammation-related signal", never "gut inflammation detected".
  • Gluten-related testing in dogs is biologically plausible in selected populations, and serum antibody panels have shown poor specificity for chronic enteropathy. Vetica treats the gluten result as a focused hypothesis, not a conclusion.

The evidence

Veterinary evidence behind the approach

2026 ACVIM guidance: 38–89% of dogs with chronic inflammatory enteropathy are food-responsive. Therapeutic diet trials are a first-line approach, exclusive feeding should last at least two weeks, and responses often appear within 10–14 days. [1]

How Vetica applies it: A 21-day diet-response checkpoint is reasonable for clinically stable dogs, presented as a checkpoint rather than a food-allergy diagnosis.

AAHA food-allergy guidance: formal diet trials run 4–12 weeks, and reintroduction confirms food allergy after improvement. [2]

How Vetica applies it: Skin- and ear-dominant cases need a longer veterinarian-guided pathway. A 21-day check cannot rule food allergy in or out.

Only 40.1% of surveyed owners reported perfect adherence to prescribed elimination trials; knowledge and confidence improve adherence. [3]

How Vetica applies it: Vetica reduces friction and records diet slips as useful context instead of teaching a full clinical protocol.

Canine salivary calprotectin can be measured reliably and rose in systemic inflammatory and immune conditions in a 2025 validation study; the study did not establish gut specificity. [4]

How Vetica applies it: Results are reported as an inflammation-related signal, with the cause left open.

Canine gluten/gliadin literature supports biological plausibility in selected disease populations, while serum gliadin-related antibodies have shown poor specificity for chronic enteropathy. [5, 6]

How Vetica applies it: The gluten result is used as a focused hypothesis worth investigating, never as proof of causality.
